A Team-Based Approach to Obstetric Care: Meeting Your Whole Support Squad

One of the most meaningful parts of pregnancy care today is the team you’ll meet along the way. Modern obstetric practices are built around collaboration, ensuring you have access to the unique strengths of Physician Associates (PAs), Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs), Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (DOs), and Medical Doctors (MDs). Each plays a vital role in supporting you and your growing baby.
Throughout your pregnancy, you may meet a variety of clinicians—each with unique training and perspectives. PAs are medically trained clinicians who work closely with your OB team to perform exams, interpret tests, manage treatment plans, and ensure you always have a knowledgeable, approachable provider available to you. CNMs specialize in low-risk pregnancy and are known for their supportive, holistic approach to labor and birth. DOs bring a whole-body philosophy to medicine, blending traditional obstetric care with an emphasis on wellness and prevention. MDs provide advanced medical and surgical expertise, especially when more complex situations arise.
Even though their backgrounds differ, your care team works closely together, communicating behind the scenes to make sure every step of your pregnancy is safe, personalized, and supported. A team-based model means you’re never alone—you have an entire group of dedicated professionals invested in your health and your baby’s arrival.
