Pregnancy Q & A

How do I choose an obstetrician?

Finding the physician who will attend to you and your growing baby throughout your entire pregnancy, called an obstetrician or OB/GYN, is exceptionally important. Obstetricians have been specially trained to evaluate pregnancy, several women’s health illnesses, and can treat any obstacles which could arise during the development of the pregnancy or during labor. When choosing an OB/GYN, finding a doctor who makes you feel comfortable and has the proper training required is crucial to making sure the pregnancy goes smoothly. Planning a consultation with the obstetrician can help you to become acquainted with the doctor’s education and style which can help you to choose someone you will be comfortable with. Throughout the consultation, ask questions about issues which are important to you and bring up any concerns you may have, especially regarding current illnesses or concerns which you may be experiencing, including diabetes, and particular wishes you might have for the delivery. Stages of Pregancy

How can I ensure a healthy pregnancy?

Healthy eating habits and a consistent level of safe activity can make a large impact during a woman’s pregnancy. The developing fetus and the mother are getting vitamins and nutrients from the same source so it is very important to eat healthy foods full of important nutrients, as opposed to simply eating more. Vitamin supplements can also be beneficial when taken under the obstetrician’s supervision and advice. Remember that these supplements including prenatal vitamins do not replace a balanced diet, they work together with it. Moderate activity can also help the body to stay healthy and strong.

What happens during the prenatal evaluation?

The consultation or exam will involve several routine health checkup procedures including blood work, collecting blood pressure, weight recording, and obtaining urine samples. As the pregnancy progresses, the obstetrician will monitor the child’s heart rate in addition to yours and will usually conduct an ultrasound to view the baby’s development. Prenatal checkups will continue throughout the entire pregnancy, usually becoming more frequent, and up till delivery.
