Gynecology Q & A

What is gynecology?

Gynecology is a branch of medicine which focuses on the care and treatment of patients born female or who have female body parts (whether or not they identify as women). A gynecologist is a medical physician who treats conditions and diseases which affect women and their reproductive organs. Gynecologists are also usually trained in obstetrics which is the care pregnant women including childbirth. These doctors are often referred to as OB/GYNs, or obstetricians and gynecologists. Gynecologists will treat diseases of the uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries, cervix, vagina, and vulva. A gynecologist will also work with women to care for menstrual problems and provide contraception in addition to addressing sexuality, menopause, and infertility.

Why would I need to go to the gynecologist?

Women will need to visit their gynecologist on a regular basis. It is suggested that women visit the gynecologist’s office at least once a year for a “well woman” or routine, annual exam. The doctor uses this exam to monitor how the woman’s body is sustaining its reproductive capabilities and to identify problems with the organs before they become major concerns. Women may also need to visit the gynecologist if there is a suspected problem and to gain access to birth control. The gynecologist can educate women about safe sexual practices and will be able to provide overviews of different types of available contraception. The physician is also authorized to prescribe birth control pills and other forms of contraception. The gynecologist will also be able to provide information about fertility and getting pregnant.

What can a gynecologist treat?

Gynecologists can treat a wide range of known issues or conditions which involve the female reproductive system. Heavy or painful menstrual periods, urinary tract infections (UTIs), yeast infections, endometriosis, and internal cysts and fibroids are just a few examples. Essentially, any problem a woman has with this region of her body will be referred to the gynecologist for treatment and care.
