Vaginoplasty Q & A

What is a vaginoplasty?

After multiple, vaginal childbirths, the muscles in the vagina can become weak and stretched because of the demanding expansion it undergoes during delivery. These weak or loose vaginal muscles can affect many women and several find that even when following an exercise program, in addition to other techniques, the problem does not improve. Although the experience of childbirth is vastly rewarding, for many women the after effects can be quite frustrating and discouraging for both themselves and their sexual partners. Vaginoplasty, also known as vaginal rejuvenation, is an operation which can help to correct these problems related to stretched vaginal muscles resulting from childbirth. This procedure can considerably improve the quality of a woman’s sexual life. Vaginoplasty can work to tone vaginal muscles, allowing for improved contraction strength and control. Therefore, greater sensation during sexual activity can be achieved.

What is the procedure like?

Vaginoplasty is a relatively simple surgical, gynecologic procedure. It tightens vaginal muscles and neighboring soft tissues by exciting surplus vaginal mucosa, or the lining. This decrease in the size of vaginal muscles causes increased friction during sexual activity which in turn can increase sexual satisfaction.

What is recovery like?

Following the surgery, the patient is usually able to get around comfortably in about two to three days and can begin to engage in sexual activities again in about 4 to 6 weeks. Surgical risks are very minimal. Risks present are associated with most surgical procedures and can be prevented with proper aftercare.

What should I do next?

If you are experiencing undesirable side effects and reduced muscle strength in the vagina as the result of multiple vaginal deliveries, contact the office to schedule a consultation with the doctor. The gynecologist will go over your symptoms and medical history to design a treatment plan that will work best for your needs. If surgery is right for you, the physician will provide details about everything you need to do before and after the surgery.
